How to tag everyone in a WhatsApp group

Use @all to mention every member at once, what to do when it doesn’t work, and how to tag people without annoying them.

Checked on 19 October 2026 · 4 min read

In short: type @all in the group’s message box and tap @all. Everyone in the group is mentioned, even people who muted it, unless they’ve also muted @all mentions. In groups of 32 or fewer members anyone can use it; in bigger groups only admins can. @all is still rolling out, so if you don’t see it, tag people one by one for now.

Tag everyone with @all

The steps are the same on Android and iPhone.

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Type @all in the message box.
  3. Tap @all in the list that appears.
  4. Write your message and tap send.

Members see an @ next to the unread message in their chats list, so they can catch up on it quickly.

If @all doesn’t work

  • It hasn’t reached your app yet. WhatsApp is still testing @all. It recommends keeping the app updated so you get it as soon as it’s available.
  • The group has more than 32 members and you’re not an admin. In bigger groups, only admins can use @all. Ask an admin to send the message, or to make you an admin.
  • You typed @everyone. WhatsApp uses @all.

Until @all works for you, tag people one by one (below). For announcements to hundreds of people, a community’s announcement group reaches every member: see WhatsApp Community vs Group.

Tag one person

  1. In the group chat, type @ in the message box.
  2. Choose the member’s name from the list. Repeat to tag more people.
  3. Write your message and send it.

A tagged name may look different on other people’s phones, depending on how the name is saved in their contacts.

Mentions and muted groups

A mention gets through even if someone has muted the group. That is what makes it useful, and why it annoys people when it’s overused. Members can mute @all mentions separately, so a group that tags everyone too often trains people to ignore it.

  • Tag everyone for deadlines, changes and anything every member must act on.
  • Tag one or two people when a question is for them.
  • Tag nobody for updates people can read when they open the group.

@all is not a member tag

WhatsApp also has member tags: a short label about you or your role, such as “Account manager” or “Designer”. It appears under your name on your messages and in the members list, and you can set a different tag in each group.

  1. Open the group and tap the group name.
  2. Scroll to the members list and tap Add member tag.
  3. Type your tag (up to 30 characters, no links or special characters) and tap Save.

In a client group, member tags help the client see who does what on your side.

Tagging in client groups

In a group with a client, a tag tells one person on either side that something is theirs to do. The harder part is making sure every question the client asks gets an answer, whoever it was addressed to.

How do I tag everyone in a WhatsApp group?

In the group chat, type @all in the message box, tap @all, write your message and send it. Everyone in the group is mentioned. If @all doesn’t appear, it may not have reached your app yet: tag people one by one with @ and their name.

Why can’t I use @all or @everyone in my WhatsApp group?

There are two common reasons. @all is still rolling out, so it may not have reached your app yet. And in groups with more than 32 members, only admins can use it. The word that works is @all, not @everyone.

Does @all notify people who muted the group?

Yes. A mention gets through even if someone has muted the group, unless they’ve also muted @all mentions. Use it for messages everyone really needs to see.

Can only admins use @all?

In groups with 32 or fewer members, every member can use @all. In bigger groups, only admins can.

What is a group member tag?

A different feature with a similar name: a short label under your name in one group, such as your role. Add it from the group info, in the members list, with Add member tag. It can be up to 30 characters.

Can I tag people in a client group from ConvoDock?

Yes. In a group chat in the shared inbox, type @ to choose a member and tag them, the same as on your phone. Tagging everyone at once with @all isn’t available in ConvoDock yet.
