How to use two WhatsApp accounts on one phone
Add a second account on Android or iPhone, run WhatsApp Business alongside, and what to do when one phone isn’t enough.
In short: WhatsApp lets you add a second account on the same phone. Open Settings, tap the add button next to your name, choose Add account and verify your second number. You can have two accounts, each with its own number, and switch between them. The WhatsApp Business app can run alongside on a different number. When your business needs more numbers, or more than one person answering, a shared inbox is the next step.
Before you start
- A second phone number. Each WhatsApp account needs its own number, and it must be able to receive the six-digit code by text or call. It can be on a second SIM or an eSIM.
- The latest version of WhatsApp, from the Play Store or App Store.
- Your main phone. A second account can only be added on your primary phone.
On Android
Add the second account
- Tap ⋮ (More options) > Settings.
- Next to your name, tap ⊕ (Add) > Add account.
- Tap Agree and continue to accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
- Choose your country and enter your second number in international format.
- Tap Continue to get your code. If it doesn’t arrive, tap Verify another way to get it by text or call.
- Enter the six-digit code, then your name, and tap Next. Add a profile photo now or later.
Switch between accounts
Tap ⋮ > Switch accounts.
On iPhone
Add the second account
- Tap Settings.
- Next to your name, tap ⊕ (Add) > Add Account.
- Tap Agree and Continue.
- Choose your country and enter your second number in international format.
- Tap Continue to get your code, or Verify another way to get it by text or call.
- Enter the six-digit code, then your name, and tap Next.
Switch between accounts
Tap Settings, then the ⌄ arrow next to your profile, and tap the other account.
On iPhone, a few features, such as connecting a payment method, aren’t available yet on a second account.
With WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp Business is a separate app for businesses. You can run it alongside WhatsApp on the same phone, as long as each uses a different number. For example, keep your personal number in WhatsApp and your business number in WhatsApp Business.
- One number, one app at a time. The same number can’t be used in both apps at once.
- You can move between them. Moving your number to WhatsApp Business brings your chat history with it, and you can move it back to WhatsApp later.
- No second account inside WhatsApp Business. Account switching isn’t available in the WhatsApp Business app, so it holds one number.
Limits to know
- Two accounts at most in the WhatsApp app on one phone.
- One number per account. You can’t add a second number to an existing account.
- One account on screen at a time. You still get notifications for the other one, but you have to switch to read or reply.
- Keep both numbers active. The SIM or eSIM for each number needs to stay active for you to keep that account.
- Back up before removing an account. Removing one only takes it off that phone, and anything not backed up is lost.
When you need more than two
Two accounts on one phone suit one person with a personal and a work number. They stop working for a business when there are more numbers than that, when a number needs more than one person answering it, or when chats wait because the right person isn’t holding the right phone.

Can I use two WhatsApp accounts on one phone?
Yes. The WhatsApp app holds up to two accounts on the same phone, each with its own phone number. Add the second one from Settings: tap the add button next to your name and choose Add account. You get notifications for both and switch between them to read and reply.
Can I use two WhatsApp accounts with the same number?
No. Each WhatsApp account has one phone number, and the same number can’t be used in WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business app at the same time. You can move a number from one app to the other, chat history included.
Do I need a second SIM card?
You need a second phone number that can receive the verification code by text or call. It can be on a second SIM or an eSIM. WhatsApp uses the number you verify, not a particular SIM slot, but the SIM or eSIM with that number must stay active for you to keep the account.
Will I get messages on both accounts?
Yes. The account you aren’t using still shows notifications for messages and calls. To read a message or answer, switch to that account first.
Can I have two WhatsApp Business accounts on one phone?
Not inside the WhatsApp Business app: account switching isn’t available there. You can run the WhatsApp Business app on one number and the regular WhatsApp app on another, or keep each business number on its own phone.
